Article overview
This critical narrative review examines the overlap between appearance concerns and performance pressure in athletes. It distinguishes high personal standards from distress over imperfection and considers evidence concerning self-compassion and self-criticism. The article proposes evaluative threat as a possible connection between appearance-based and achievement-based judgements. It separates research conducted with athletes from evidence drawn from other populations, and does not treat improvements in psychological outcomes as proof of better objective sporting performance.
