Article overview
This narrative review examines why continued training does not necessarily indicate healthy motivation. It considers burnout, psychological needs, pressure and the social conditions of sporting participation. The discussion distinguishes personally endorsed commitment from participation sustained by external or internal demands. It also separates high standards from persistent concern about mistakes. Its account of sustainable participation includes revisable goals, supportive relationships and the ability to raise concerns without threats to personal worth.
