Article overview
This integrative review examines athletes' decisions about disclosing psychological distress when other people influence selection or employment. It distinguishes private clinical conversations from communication with coaches, teammates and the public. The article considers confidentiality, anticipated consequences and organisational barriers, while separating expectations from observed outcomes. Its proposed framework examines who receives a disclosure, when it occurs and how service arrangements affect meaningful access to care. The objective is appropriate support and choice, rather than disclosure as an end in itself.
